DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, split-seconds chronograph, likely a unique prototype, at least 16J, 16S, heavy 14K gold OF original J&S (Jeannot & Shiebler) case, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial with outer chapter in 1/5-second increments, SW-SS, nickel damascene, s#2888615. Gross weight of assembled watch 76.1 dwt (118.4 g). An exceedingly rare, if not unique, piece for the Elgin collector; we have encountered only a small handful of Elgin chronographs of any type, and among these we are only aware of a single other example with split-seconds function though of somewhat different overall design. Elgin chronographs we have encountered have all had differences from one another and appear to have been made on an experimental or prototype basis which apparently was never brought to scale production. This example uses a Grade 108 movement as its base and features a split-seconds chronograph design similar to what Waltham employed in this era, and the watch has a purpose-made factory dial which is visually similar to the style used among Elgin's "doctor's watch" production but differs in having a subsidiary seconds-register and also in the details of its combined minutes and chronograph chapter at perimeter.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good chronograph and split-seconds function apart from an occasional error of up to a second or two to hand reset position, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, some scattered small bits of oxide to steelwork, central split-seconds bridge with what appears to be a soldered repair of a fracture near its affixing screw; dial with small perimeter hls outside 1, some edge flakes between 12 and 2, perimeter hl outside 8; excellent hands, few small bits of oxide to sweep-seconds-hands; case shows light wear, few small dings to rear, ding to rear of band at 7; tight bow, crown shows medium wear with small ridge break; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $4000 - $6600
